PROJECT

Residential Steel & Timber Cantilevered Deck

SCOPE

Arch Engineers designed and engineered a two-level steel-timber cantilevered deck and parallelogram pergola on a steep slope adjacent to Mackay Creek. The scope included micro pile foundations, reinforced concrete walls and stairs to improve durability, and a custom glass roof over the pergola. Arch also managed permitting and coordination with city departments to ensure regulatory compliance for this sensitive streamside development.

LOCATION

PROJECT SUMMARY

The Mackay Deck project, undertaken by Arch Engineers Ltd., involved designing and constructing a two-level deck on a steep slope adjacent to Mackay Creek. The project featured a steel-timber cantilevered deck and a distinctive parallelogram pergola, covering 134 m². The robust design included a steel frame supported by micropiles and concrete walls, ensuring stability on the steep terrain.

Initially, the design called for a wooden deck. However, Arch Engineers chose reinforced concrete walls and stairs to boost strength and durability. This strategic change enhanced the steel timber deck’s longevity and helped it blend better with the natural surroundings.

A key highlight was the large glass roof over the pergola, adding a unique aesthetic to the outdoor space. Moreover, Arch Engineers coordinated effectively between the owner and city departments. Since this was part of a streamside development plan, it required careful navigation of bylaws and permits. Arch Engineers ensured smooth communication and compliance, allowing for timely project delivery.

Overall, the Mackay Deck project showcases Arch Engineers Ltd.’s skill in combining creative design with strong engineering solutions. The result is an attractive, functional outdoor deck space that incorporates steel and timber fits perfectly with its challenging landscape.
