PROJECT SUMMARY

Arch Engineers was called in to address critical challenges during the construction of a 4000mm deep entry pit for the installation of a Pipe-Thruster machine. The project encountered unforeseen difficulties when the ground material did not match the conditions outlined in the geotechnical report, leading to failed embedment and damage to the sheet pile wall. These issues only became apparent during excavation, significantly complicating the mitigation measures required to continue safely.

These unexpected conditions required immediate action to prevent further damage and ensure safety, and any further disturbances could have led to a catastrophic failure.

Arch rapidly developed several revisions. The first step involved remedial work to patch the separated sheet piles, allowing excavation to continue while stabilizing the surrounding soil. Then Arch designed a strengthening system, including lower walers and beam struts beneath the Pipe-Thruster machine.

Maintaining a safe operating envelope for the thruster and pipe feed was essential. The revised designs required precise engineering and careful execution, with the team working under tight deadlines to ensure the project could continue without further delays.

Given the unexpected challenges, Arch Engineers emphasized safety throughout the project. The compromised sheet piles posed significant risks to both the excavation’s stability and the workers on site. The revised designs were implemented with safety as the top priority, ensuring all work was carried out in a controlled and secure manner. Arch’s swift response and innovative engineering solutions ultimately stabilized the site, allowing the safe installation of the Pipe-Thruster machine.
