Light Rail Transit Traffic Deck

SCOPE

Provided structural design for multiple modular bridge structures as part of a cut-and-cover rapid transit tunnel in an urban environment. Engineered custom bridge geometries to fit angled bearings on curved excavation walls, addressing both construction and urban traffic loads. Designs prioritized rapid install/removal, enabling uninterrupted access to the excavation and minimizing public disruption. Delivered lightweight, high-performance solutions optimized for safety, material efficiency, and constructability.

PROJECT SUMMARY

Arch was engaged in a cut and cover project for an urban underground light rail rapid transit system, a complex endeavor requiring several bridge designs and modifications to existing structures. The project involved designing bridges that could fit the unique shape of angled bearings on curved excavation walls, ensuring they met urban loading requirements as well as construction loading needs. Our team meticulously engineered these bridges to provide robust support while accommodating the dynamic forces and constraints of the curved excavation. 

In addition to structural integrity, the design prioritized temporary access to the excavation site, allowing for easy removal and replacement of the bridges. This approach was crucial for minimizing road closures and disruptions in a bustling urban environment. By designing modular, quickly deployable bridge components, we were able to maintain traffic flow and reduce the impact on the surrounding community. The efficient, flexible design allowed construction crews to access the excavation site as needed without compromising the overall project schedule. 

Safety and performance were at the forefront of our design philosophy, leading to the development of light, lean bridge structures that maximized strength while minimizing material use. These designs not only met stringent safety standards but also provided cost-effective solutions for the light rail transit system.
