PROJECT

Crane Recovery Lift Plan

SCOPE

Arch Engineers developed a detailed recovery lift plan after a 160-tonne crane over-tipped on a steep slope during Coastal Gaslink Pipeline construction. The plan involved coordinated use of an excavator, dozer, and secondary crane to stabilize the machine, untangle twisted wire rope, and safely restore the crane to working condition; all under urgent and high-risk site conditions.

PROJECT SUMMARY

Arch Engineers Ltd. developed a critical Recovery Lift Plan for SA Energy after a 160-tonne mobile crane encountered a severe issue during relocation at the Coastal Gaslink Pipeline construction site. The crane’s boom had extended past its backstops, and the wire rope became twisted around the boom. This caused the lifting hardware to shut down, leaving the crane precariously positioned on a steep slope and unable to operate safely.

The project presented several challenges, primarily due to the steep and uneven terrain, which led to the crane’s boom tipping over its limits. This created a highly unsafe situation that required immediate and precise intervention. In response, Arch Engineers crafted a detailed, step-by-step Recovery Lift Plan that placed safety and accuracy at the forefront.

The Recovery Lift Plan called for the coordinated use of heavy equipment including an excavator, a dozer, and a second 160-tonne crane. Together, these machines were employed to carefully untangle the wire rope and stabilize the compromised crane. This complex operation demanded meticulous planning to avoid further damage to the crane and to protect personnel on site. Arch Engineers’ approach ensured the recovery process proceeded smoothly, safely, and efficiently.

Beyond addressing the immediate safety concerns, the Recovery Lift Plan facilitated the crane’s successful recovery, enabling construction work to resume without prolonged interruptions. This project underscores Arch Engineers Ltd.’s expertise in developing robust and safe recovery solutions for challenging and high-risk environments, demonstrating our commitment to technical precision and operational excellence.
